Yamada Kazu was born into a potting family, going on to study at Osaka University of Arts, where he was taught by Suzuki Osamu. Following his graduation in 1976 he built his own kiln, working and participating in several solo exhibitions in Japan. In 1988 he travelled to Germany, building a kiln there. Another important influence as well as Suzuki Osamu was Kato Tokuro, who he studied under up until Kato’s death in 1985. Both his tutors have inspired his practice, focusing on modern interpretations of traditional tea ware, particularly Shino and Oribe wares. His works are held in institutions including the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.
