Wakimoto Hiroyuki

(Japanese b.1952)

Wakimoto Hiroyuki was not born into a family of potters. Originally from Tsushima, Nagasaki Prefecture in Kyushu, he first studied textile design at Osaka Art College. He soon became dissatisfied with textiles and so left college, however a visit to friend who was apprenticed with a ceramist in Bizen proved to be a turning point in his life. He was inspired by Bizen ware, and at the age of 30 became an apprentice under Joji Yamashita. Nine years later in 1990 he established his own kiln and studio in Bizen.
