Hamada Shinsaku

(Japanese 1929-2023)

The son of Hamada Shoji, he lived and worked in Mashiko, later alongside his son Tomoo on the original compound built by his father. Hamada Shinsaku originally studied industrial art at Waseda University in Tokyo before going on to train under his father, becoming very technically skilled and learning to continue the forms and decorative styles of his father’s practice and the Mashiko tradition. In 1953 he accompanied his father on his teaching tour to the US as his assistant. In 1978 he was named director of the Mashiko Sankonan Museum, a position he held for 34 years until 2012 when his son Tomoo was appointed.
