David Roberts

(British b.1947)

David Roberts was introduced to ceramics at Bretton Hall College, and went on to work as a secondary school art teacher, whilst also developing his interest in making. He started to focus exclusively on raku from the late 1970s and in 1981 he left fulltime teaching to concentrate on making. His large-scale raku works are coil-built, and distinctive for his technique of ‘Painting with Smoke’ or Naked Raku. The surfaces of his works are decorated with geometric and linear patterns created from the raku process. He takes his inspiration from the natural landscape, particularly the effects of water and erosion, and recent works also reflect his interest in post-war abstract painting.
