Nishihata Tadashi

(Japanese b.1948)

Nishihata Tadashi is an important contemporary maker of Tamba ware, one of the 'Six Ancient Kilns' of Japan with an 850-year history. He was born into a potting family from the Tamba region and continues this historic lineage with his work. He works with traditional Tamba techniques such as ‘akadobe’ red slip, and is also known for his use of thick ash glazes. His works are often carved and faceted, highlighting the layered colours of the glazes he employs, creating a impression of landscapes on the forms.
