Gabriele Koch

(German b.1948)

Gabriele Koch started making at evening pottery classes while working as a language teacher in London in 1973. She went on to study at Goldsmiths College and held her first solo exhibition at Oliver and Pink Gallery in Chelsea in 1984. Since then she has been widely exhibited in the UK and worldwide, her works are held in public collections in the UK, Europe and the US.

Koch's works are hand-coiled, usually of symmetrical but softly curved forms, and burnished and smoke-fired to create her distinctive smooth and mottled surfaces. Her more recent practice has moved away from smoke-firing, experimenting with surface texture and combining stoneware clay with porcelain.
