Fukami Sueharu is one of the leading names in contemporary Japanese ceramics, an internationally recognised potter and sculptor known for his iconic 'blade' and 'wave' forms executed in porcelain with pale blue green seihakuji glaze.
Fukami Sueharu was born into a family of potters in Kyoto, and studied at both the Kyoto Ceramics Training School and Kyoto Arts and Crafts Training centre. Fukami works exclusively in porcelain with pale blue green glaze (seihakuji). Within this technique, his works are precise and refined, and he is perhaps best-known for his ‘blade’ and ‘wave’ forms which are slip cast, and both dramatic in scale and elegant in their simplicity. Since the late 1970s he has focused on these large scale sculptural works, though has continued to make smaller scale table and functional wares. He has won numerous awards including Grand Prize at the International Ceramic Exhibition at Faenza, Italy in 1985. He has been exhibited widely outside Japan, and his works are held in numerous public collections worldwide.
