Ichino Shigeyoshi

(Japanese 1942-2011)

The son of Tamba potter Ichino Tanso. When Janet Leach went to Japan, she spent time in Tamba at their family pottery, and invited Ichino Shigeyoshi to spend time at Leach Pottery. He travelled there in 1969 to work at Leach Pottery. He went on to travel to Villenaux, France in 1971 where he oversaw the construction of a kiln. Upon returning to Japan, he held a number of solo exhibitions, and remains well-known in the UK due to his time working here, and visits over subsequent years, including for an exhibition with Janet Leach at the Amalgam Gallery, London in 1981.
