Gabriele Koch | Large Oval Dish, 2000

Earthenware, smoke-fired and burnished surface, mottled terracotta, dark cream and dark grey colours, the oval form with dipped rim, incised signature
H 12.2cm, W 64.6cm, D 35.8cm
PROVENANCE: The George Kyriacou Collection, London
LITERATURE: Tony Birks, 'Gabriele Koch - Hand Building and Smoke Firing', Stenlake Publishing, 2009; p.58 for an illustration of this work. The caption quotes Koch stating, 'The dynamics of the form are complemented by the surface treatment. The texture of fine burnishing marks makes the surface vibrate and gives it rhythm and life, catches the light and makes it play on the surface rather than bouncing back. The smoke marks which penetrate deeply into the clay body and give the surface a three-dimensional quality are planned to complement form and surface by adding further movement or setting accents and added contrast.'
CONDITION: Perfect condition with no damage or restoration
